I am currently what can be described as a Design Technician Lead in the medical device industry. My daily work includes assigning work, troubleshooting, and checking the work of other design technicians. Outside of that, I find myself helping other sections of production (both physically and digitally), writing documentation regarding the process I oversee, and sometimes assist other people with research.
When I talk about my job to friends and family, many have asked if I actually was a manager. I tell them no, as I have only have been considered a “Lead”. I don't take care of common manager tasks, such as hiring new workers or planning production goals. When I included those details to those people I talked to, they insisted that I sounded like a manager.
There are no other designated managers, but we collectively recognize certain personnel as leaders of the team. I feel as I am a part of the group, but at the lowest level.
I wanted to see what other people think about this. I do work on salary, which increased twice last year. However, some of my co-workers have talked about how the feel they are underpaid, and I agree with this. It seems apparent, especially with the multiple days that I work overtime, but don't get a bonus for doing so without completing a significant amount of extra work.
Should I be considered a Lead or a manager?
