I’ve posted here a couple of times about my recent job search and have to get some perspective about a new interview I have next week. I’m a registered nurse, graduated nursing school in 2008. My recent experience is in home health and I loved that setting of healthcare. I began applying for new jobs because I wanted a change in companies and I can’t tell if it just doesn’t seem to be going well or if I’m actually jaded and see the negative in all of these job openings.
My next interview is for a company that offers Senior assistance Monday-Friday to prevent hospitalizations and they need someone for the weekend for on call. I loved being on the go throughout the work day and hate sitting in one place so I figured why not, I’ll apply. I received a phone call from their company immediately after hitting that send button to submit my resume- red flag IMO. The woman seemed really nice so I talked with her for a little bit. She told me they’re offering a really nice hourly wage for when you’re dispatched to the home and if not, you’re at home just on call, waiting for patients and their families to call if needed due to various medical reasons. They also guarantee you a base rate of $200/weekend if you’re not called out. I figured it didn’t seem so bad.
However, after combing through the specifics on their website, I see that this position requires you to be on call every weekend from Friday at 4:30pm to Monday at 8:30am non stop! No breaks at all! How is this even legal?? This means I could get called out at Friday night at 2am and turn around and be called out all day Saturday morning, evening and night and same with Saturday into Sunday. And on top of that, the coverage areas are an hour plus each way. My biggest concern is that this employer is looking to have one person cover three days straight without any downtime and would love to hear all of your input on this.
