This is just a rant to the void of people who at least understand.
TLDR: American corp under paying Canadian employees who work better than most states plants. Guys are starting to leave and find better paying work while this plant fails to hire new people to move to a second shift.
I work for an American corp in Canada, nothing special just vehicle manufacturing. I personally work in EHS (the safety nerd) and most people here are PA's (production associates) or welders and they get the job done much faster, safer, and higher quality than most states plants and the 1 other Canadian plant thats here.
Most of the team here has worked here for 20+ years or are the only people who know to do the jobs required (like building a door to spec).
We are trying to ramp up and start a second shift or skeleton crew for the evenings so we are trying to hire people en mass. The issues that management keeps running into is that all the interviews turn into No Shows or ghosting after signing on and going through all the HR work. We keep getting No Shows because we are offering peanuts for a experienced welder position, or a experienced electrician. Even the guys with 20+ years experience and knowledge are being paid >$20CAD / Hour.
I find it criminal that you spend decades with a corp doing back breaking work (or shoulders in some cases) and not being paid a surviving wage. Any time i bring this up to any management member i get the same responce “Well if we pay more then we have to charge more for our units and customers wont buy from us.”
Ive been talking with a lot of the guys here and they are all looking for better paying work. Guys who know their jobs in and out which not another soul in this building knows how to do fast and decent. Itll be an interesting few months with prices increases, wages (here) staying the same for actual decades, and little to no care for employees finances.
