Anyone else just feel hopeless?

I am 28 and I currently live with my dad. I do have a job but it pays slightly above minimum wage around $10hr. While I am not in any debt or I am living paycheck to paycheck. But I just am sick of getting rejection emails a lot. I have put around $45k in mutual funds and hoping that will make a lot of money over the next few decades so that way I may have enough to retire or own my own place. I know I don't want to keep working for the rest of my life. If I do have to keep working I would rather have a “laptop lifestyle” kind of job where I can work on my own when I want as much as I want. Or the ability to work from home. While I know having $60k might seem like a lot I worry that some medical emergency might happen or if I start renting or buying a home I might blow through that much money rather quickly. I want to know what can I do in my current situation so I can be more independent?
