I once worked seasonal at a UPS Hub which was also attached to an airport so we packed planes as well. I was very young and this was a seasonal second job I was taking to save money up for cool shit like video games. The job was dangerous, you were mostly needed in the extreme seasons like winter and summer, and you got paid 10.40 an hour and they only had work 4 hours a day for 3 days for each employee because of this and employees had to sign up to be approved to work more. Nearly, everyone besides the managers struggled with money, addictions, and had poor health but insisted everyone join the union. Every time I asked the benefits they simply stated you get to attend meetings and practice safety and possibly bring up more safety practices. That doesn't sound like a bad thing necessarily but what about pay and hours, health insurance – this was 2017 but even then noone can live off of like 400 a month if this was their sole job and I hated the fact that even non-seasonal workers had to petition for more hours each week. Have the unions changed for UPS Hub workers and has pay and hours become more sustainable for them? A lot of the people I met there were really fighting to survive and I think and worry about them sometimes.
