This is a terrible idea and a symptom of the right's inability to think clearly or dig deeper than their “gut” reaction. Yes, it is fun to imagine some science teacher blowing away a dirtbag, but this:
- Ever seen a teacher lose their temper? I have. See that to its conclusion.
- Where will a teacher store their firearm? It will end up in a drawer or a purse, or on the bathroom sink, and some kid will figure it out and snatch it. There's a reason police officers have big bulky holsters.
- How much ongoing shoot/don't shoot training will they get? Police Officers generally get this every year, and they still make mistakes.
- How much weapon retention training will they get? This is a whole area of study with law enforcement, who practice (or should if they don't) how to prevent a suspect from overpowering them and killing them with their own gun.
- What's the rate of unintentional discharges for lightly trained carriers? Statistically speaking, there WILL be unintended discharges. Will it result in an injury or fatality? Will it end the teacher's career, or traumatize them if they actually shoot a child?
