I've been working at this company for three years. I enjoy it and I love the company. I even often tell my friends about the product. I'm a big advocate for this company.
Last summer there was a reorg which transitioned me to the team that I previously escalated to. At the time I was told that there will not be any additional compensation “at this time.” Over the past year I've taken more responsibilities and handled escalations from my old colleagues.I even took on some responsibilities for a coworker who quit recently.
Curiously, I found saw the job posting for the open position (my same title) on Glassdoor and saw that the company was offering 30k more than what I'm currently being paid. On top of that, I learned that other roles on my current team and some roles on my old team were being compensated significantly more than I am. Looking at open positions in my area, I learned that i should be making at least 35-40k more than I am currently making. I even talked to another person on my team and learned he is making 25k more than me.
Two Fridays ago I requested a compensation correction from my manager who was open to it. He reached out to HR, and a few days later I had a meeting with an HR rep. I had all of my data prepared with five bulletpoints, numbers, COL data, open positions, etc.
The HR rep dismissed and ignored every single point I had. She stated that “we cannot verify that the glassdoor information is from our own employees so we can not use it.” I asked her 'what reason would someone have to lie on glassdoor? How would that benefit them? The data must be true.' She ignored it and moved on.
She then said that “according to our own internal reports and records, you are right in-line for what you should be making.” She ignored when I told her I discussed my pay with my coworkers. She ignored when I mentioned the open positions that are being paid much more than I'm getting paid. She dismissed the glassdoor salaries of various employees. She dismissed my additional responsibilities, skills, and duties that I have been doing for the past year.
We ended the meeting with a “lets reconvene later” and I emailed her a couple of times to follow up. We have our final meeting tomorrow, an afternoon meeting with my manager and HR (yikes).
It felt so dirty. Like I was trying to convince an abusive partner to give me an allowance. Everything being dismissed, ignored, and she said so many fallacies. It was exhausting, but I didn't back down. This whole process has left an incredibly sour taste in my mouth. Like I said previously, I am an advocate for this company, but that might change now.
Tldr: HR is dismissive. Don't let them bully you around when you request a fair wage. Keep following up. Pay your employees.
