I work in a law firm and my current job title is that of an assistant. For the past 3 years however I've been handling job duties which are more in line with that of a law clerk or even a senior law clerk. All of the lawyers refer to me as their law clerk. As such I decided that I wanted my job title changed, I did not even ask for a raise with this job title change.
Today my boss responds saying that they can not change my job title because I did not formally graduate with a Law clerk degree and as such they can't grant me the position. Is this not complete bullshit? We're in 2022 where a vast majority of information/tasks can be learned online and if I have 3 years of experience anyway it should supersede the need for a diploma (other firms don't ask for this diploma either).
So I responded and told them that I would no longer be doing ANY tasks that are in line with that of a Law Clerk and that I will now only be doing my assistant role and duties. Currently waiting to see what kind of bullshit they respond with.
How is it that we still have management that believes in this “degree” or your not qualified old school style of promotions. When the job market is so competitive. If they refuse to honor my decision to only do assistant tasks i'll just quit without notice.
