So this is kind of a long story, I want the details out there so you can give me the best possible advice. I work for a bodega type place in a smallish city in NY state. There’s three employees who are not related to the owners, I’m not sure if the family is on the payroll. This week a customer was able to scam me and my coworker, our lotto drawers combined ending up being $130 short. Come to find out, this customer has tried to do this or has done this before, coworker and I were never made aware and customer has been coming in routinely to play lotto and owner acts like everything’s cool, so I don’t notice anything off. Looking at my paycheck today I noticed a spot for “misc pay” which was -$20. I called my boss who told me he’s recouping the lotto shortage and my pay will be deducted $20 until it’s paid off. I’m 99% sure that’s illegal here in NY and let him know I’d be contacting the labor board. Now, what do I say when I contact them? Who exactly do I ask for there? I know he’s done this in the past to previous employees who just allowed it, but I will not. I have to go to work tomorrow and I know it’s gonna be super awkward, but I’m not backing down. Thanks guys!!!
