I work in a chain privately owned liquor store. Like all stores we have a “rewards” program for customers. If they have a store card they get the sale prices on basically a good chunk of their booze. If they don't have a store card, us associates have to ask if they want to sign up for the card. Which involves getting their full name, EMAIL, phone number and zip code. Sounds easy enough, right? But no, no its not. The store I work in is in a heavily Eastern European demographic and I would say about 85% don't speak English.
Name, phone number and zip code are easy enough to get. Just ask to see their ID. But asking for an email is a lot harder. But the higher ups want us to get customer emails. And have bribed the associates that if we each get at least 100 emails per associate in a certain time frame, they would get us a Nespresso Machine for the break room and they'll also provide the coffee pods too.
Still sounds somewhat easy? They want the emails from existing customer accounts. Meaning trying to ask a customer for their email when they don't understand what we're asking for. And oh no. New accounts with email addresses don't count. Man, at this point I don't want the Nespresso Machine anymore so I stopped trying. And of course I get asked by the higher ups to ask for emails and get pointedly stared at when interacting with customers. It's gotten to the point one manager would pointedly say “OP get emails so your coworkers can get the coffee maker!” In front of my coworkers and putting a target on my head for not complying. I'm not sure how to handle this other then smile and nod and make half hearted attempts. I don't get paid enough to get yelled at by customers for asking “invasive” questions.
