Some of you are probably aware that there is a subreddit focused on people who try to work two full-time remote jobs without either employer knowing. The sub has 26K members (far far less than this sub) and it is un-ironically (and unabashedly) controlled by someone who uses it to funnel people to his website business and premium Discord, which I find super-sleazy. There is also a smaller, less morally-compromised sub (r/OEWork) that has sprung up to avoid the self-promoting and monetization-focused sub–and added a secondary purpose of discussing work as a concept, not just obsessing over making two salaries at once. I personally don't find these “movements” (to the extent either are really well-defined) antithetical to each other. At their core, each group recognizes that the managers and owners of companies do not give a damn about the rest of us and oppose any reform that would improve the…

I just wanted a coffee
I’ve been unwillingly unemployed for about 5 months. I just recently took a part time job just so I could start making any money. My boyfriend was just fired from from a tech company on Friday for “not washing his hands”. He says his colleagues have noticed that he gets singled out there. Neither of us qualify for UI bc of the “fault of your own” clause. We have been taking mental health walks in the morning and recently discovered a cafe in our neighborhood. It was only our second day there and the sole barista was complaining that “no one wants to work”- to two fired, desperate unemployed people. The fucking irony. Either of us, in theory, could work there and I had a wave of opportunism to offer to apply. But we just stood there stunned at our reality in that moment. Fuck 2020, 2021, 2022 and next…
I recently ran across a satire anime/manga that feels like it could be the anthem/mascot for this sub. The wikipedia synopsis for The Dungeon of Black Company doesn't really get into how much the story satirizes toxic work tropes, but it is a great humorous lampoon of crappy companies and bosses. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dungeon_of_Black_Company Anyway, I laughed more than I expected to and recommend it to others to watch with atypical expectations for this type of story.
My acquaintance is a superstar product manager at a tech startup, and they refer me to a job in another department at the startup. I get the interview, but HR never sends me the materials they say I’ll need for the case-study parts of the interview. Needless to say, the three-part (case study #1, case study #2, personality-fit screen with hiring manager) interview goes awkwardly. Considering the circumstances, however, I think I do okay. The interviewers say they appreciate my preparation and effort. The hiring manager says I have done a great job researching the company. But, they cancel the second case study after we have done the first one and had found out that HR hadn’t sent the materials. At this point, the hiring manager says she is cancelling the second case study part only because the other person who is scheduled to interview me is busy. (Usually this…
Lasy May I started working as an hourly employee thru a staffing agency. I was told it was a 6 month contract then I would be hired by the client full time. October comes around and I ask the staffing agency if I would be hired full time by the company they have me working at. Then they tell me I' ll be hired full time after the new year. Here we are well into March and I'm still working hourly. They keep stringing me along. Why do they keep moving the target? I'm starting to wonder if they knew from the very beginning that I wouldn't be hired by their client full time. What is going on here? Why are they doing this?
I work in an office with three other women. My boss, she’s hardly ever there. But I like her alright. She is pretty laid back and straight forward. “Here’s the job I have for you, just make sure you do your best, and the rest is whatever“ kind of attitude. In other words, polar opposite of micromanager. Which I love her for it. One of my co workers is about my age. She is very sweet, loves to talk, but minds her own business. Her questions for me are born from genuine curiosity. She is not interested in prying for information out of me that she knows is none of her business. It’s just “did you do anything fun this weekend?” Kind of stuff. But nothing personal. And she never makes negative remarks at me or judges me. She doesn’t feel the need to boss me around. Her and I…
I get fed up with certain policies or even being made to feel like I'm screwing everything up. But I don't feel good leaving the kids behind. I am a Dean's secretary, arguably one of the most stressful secretary position at a high school in a lower income area. I've had a student throw a ceramic pot at my head, I've been in 3-4 hard lockdowns, I've been cursed at and threatened, 3 guns and multiple knives that we know of on campus, all of which occurred since my September start date. But what I can't stand is the principal never being satisfied. She was don't tardy lockout every class period, and when I made the initiative to get more printed out, she said no, we have to edit the writing, after the graphic arts lady already printed them. I edit the master to exactly what she said, have them…
Doing Too Much (rant)
Rant. I'm a former operations manager with a wide skill set. At my peak I was making $67k/year and was comfortable – I did not need to make more money to keep up with my lifestyle and hold down a healthy savings. After being laid off, I've been holding down one part time job making $20/hr for a year and in the last 9 months have been working at a restaurant for $14.50/hr. I'm barely holding it together to cover my bills and have fallen behind on car payments, car insurance, and medical bills. I have enough to cover rent, phone, groceries, and a tank of gas each month. To say I'm losing my mind is an understatement. I've applied to at least 50 jobs since the start of the year, probably 50 more last fall, and have gotten an interview for two with no offers. I am constantly on…
Being an asshole to advance?
TL;DR at the bottom (“too long, didn't read” – summary in the bottom paragraph). Trying to keep this brief, and I'm sure it'll come across as salty to some (which I guess I kind of am salty, I'll admit). Long story short, I worked for this big insurance company for almost 5 years. I started at 18 going on 19 – it was my first real job. I was very good at it and climbed the ladder very quickly, especially being one of the youngest people there. I started there in 2013 making $12/hr and was making $20.68/hr towards the end of my tenure. I joined the company as they were undergoing massive changes. It was a laid back company before the owner sold to a big European corporation. They started firing execs that didn't save the company money. I.E. one year the company did so exceptionally well everyone got…
