Revisiting old article about Women in the Eastern bloc for a related paper:

” Some might remember that Eastern bloc women enjoyed many rights and privileges unknown in liberal democracies at the time, including major state investments in their education and training, their full incorporation into the labor force, generous maternity leave allowances and guaranteed free child care. ” Particularly the last part there, just a reminder that in 2022 in the 'richest country on earth' those things are STILL not provided to the population; by the way, when it says state investment in education, they mean free college tuition. That doesn't excuse the most egregious atrocities of the soviet government, but it certainly serves to remind that it isn't black and white. Edit: In case anyone is wondering it's from an opinion peice in the NYT, https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/12/opinion/why-women-had-better-sex-under-socialism.html

Shame on you for not wanting to work to death

Companies think if they pay you anything over minimum wage it gives them the right to work you into the ground. No real vacation time off, barely sustainable pay, and expect you to work like you make 1.1M a year. It's pathetic…

Mandatory Monthly Pot Luck Lunch

My company, which has a wide range of earners, forces each member of the office bring in something for a monthly pot luck lunch. I don’t have time to cook or bake anything since I work two jobs, and if you bring in any store bought food you are generally shamed for not taking the whole process seriously. Any suggestions on how I can go about asking my employer to call these events off? The job itself is pretty good with room for growth so I don’t want to quit but I’m worried I’ll get left behind not being able to keep up with this archaic requirement.

I Want A Raise Or I’m Out

So back in Dec I went to HR and flat out let them know: “I'm aware there are new nurses who have come to this facility who are getting paid more than me. Either I get a raise or I'm quitting and you already know I'll have a new job faster than I walked in here.” Time went on and I had gotten a side job that was helping me out. Checked in back in Jan and I got the “Still havent heard anything back from corporate on your raise.” February comes and its the same bullshit. I told them “You have until the end of February or it's a wrap.” About a week prior I had already went to another job interview. I took some time off to eat up my personal, sick, and vacation time. Its clear they called my bluff but I was not playing with these…

I dont get how half of your bosses dont end up being sued or cancelled in social media!

My country isn't particularly advance, I live in Latin America and is considered a country in “ways of development”, even so we are really critical people when it comes to sexism or work laws, even if its the slightest case we riot and cancel the asshole on social media. Im not talking about a few people, really if the case comes to the attention of the country we make the life of the aggressor impossible to live. I dont get how your bosses can say sexist things or take advantage of you without remorse. Do this people never pay, no one cancel them, get sued or something?

When a pay raise feels like a slap to the face.

Today is Friday. Payday. I woke up to check that my direct deposit went in, and to my surprise the amount was about $100 more than usual (still not enough to cover the rent due tomorrow without overdrafting). I thought, “Huh, that's weird. I bet they messed up something in payroll and are going to deduct it from my next check.” So when I got to the office, I logged into the time clock system and saw that my hours for the previous week were correct. The only other thing it could have been was a raise (and a somewhat decent one at that)! Excited, I checked my pay rates: Old – $25.49/hr New – $26.25/hr (effective 1/30/22, back pay applied retroactively which accounts for the extra $100) The difference is 3%. THREE FUCKING PERCENT. With the amount of shit I put up with and the number of fires I…
