Even though my company had two consecutive record breaking years in terms of revenue, at the first whiff of a downturn, they laid off several entire departments of employees this week. Their solution to the layoffs? Spread that work out to the employees that we didn't cut and refuse to offer any sort of raise. I have not had my pay revisited in a year and a half, so already would be making less money than last year at my same rate; now on top of it, I get to absorb the workloads of multiple departments I previously relied on, on a daily basis. Now I'm kicking myself for not being more dispensable as I would be in a better position today if I had just been laid off. I started my company at a young age to attempt to have a sustainable income doing the same thing I did for many other companies. I charged clients for materials up front with no up charges and receipts were handed directly to clients to show exactly what they paid for. I never lost a bid almost always coming in less then half of any competition and still made a good life for myself and others. My employees were from all different walks of life, some were even drug addicted when coming to me for work. I helped employees get clean from drugs, I was able to provide housing, food and in some cases even provided new clothes until they were stable and ready to do it on their own. I was sexually assaulted at my last job by a relative of the HR person. The company defended the assailant. I originally posted a Glassdoor review that immediately saw users bumping the “helpful” button…. until Glassdoor removed my review a month later, apparently because of an accidental glitch that occurred when I originally posted. It does not sit right with me that new employees would accept a position without the information that they could potentially face bodily harm while working for this business. I’m considering posting the review underneath the company’s “we’re hiring!” posts on LinkedIn. Thoughts?

So I work in MD. And in the state of MD (maybe other states idk) you get unpaid sick leave. Basically it’s a safety net so that way if anything unexpected arises medically or family wise you can call out without being fired but you don’t get paid. I didn’t know this until this morning. The company I work for offers sick time and PTO after 6 months. My pay stubs say I have 28.36 hours accrued. Keep in mind I put in my two weeks notice last Friday. So I asked if it would be paid out next week when I left (I was under the impression I was accruing hours but just couldn’t use them until after 6 months) My boss shows up to work and asks me what’s going on so I explain to him the situation and he fired me. The so-called “worker shortage” has been a ticking time bomb for about twenty years. Around that time, many companies decided to save money by cutting leadership (and personal development) training. Bottom line results were impressive. But it was short-sighted. We do not have a worker shortage. We have a shortage of solid mid-level leaders. A lot of unqualified people have “manager” in their title. Where employees do not see themselves as valued team members and their unique gifts integrated into their jobs, cynicism sets in. Don't blame the entry level workers. Don't blame their immediate supervisors for the failure of senior leadership to give them the tools to do their job. The boardrooms and top executives need to move their focus beyond quarterly earnings. A healthy long-term healthy American economy demands it.

After struggling with my mental health for a number of years I admitted to my boss that I am struggling with my mental health. Top tip: Never a good idea to admit this to your boss. Her response was “You should be thankful for what you have, you could be struggling to make ends meet whilst living in an awful bedsit”. If it wasn't for my parents supporting me I would be living in a crappy bed sit struggling to pay for food with the wages they pay me.
