What does being “Anti-Work” mean?
Really, like, how is the world supposed to function without work? I'm not trying to insult any of you, I just don't get it at ALL Basically, can someone explain it to me?
I took two days off this week and I wonder how to respond if my employer demands me to make up for these sick days. I caught a pretty bad laryngitis last Wednesday. Since then it's been a week of agony, five days of constant high body temperature and laying in my bed the entire day. I worked through it in home office last Friday, Saturday and Sunday, then I took two days off on Monday and Tuesday as my symptoms got only worse. I am scheduled to have free days on Wednesday and Thursday and plan to get back to my only work day in the week this Friday. As I am closer to going back to work I wonder whether will I be expected to “compensate” for my sick leave (which was unpaid as I work on a student contract)? I am alread quite stressed as I missed…
How to unplug?
So I quit my job back in October but I still find myself in a cycle of pushing widgets again…like I have daily goals in Animal Crossing or scheduling “hobby time.” I can’t even read a book without deciding how much needs to be read every day! Of course, it’s making me enjoy all these things less. How do I turn it off?
A Few Questions for The Community
I do not agree with everything or even most things on this sub but I do find it interesting. I would love to hear some feedback on things I haven't really been able to get just responding to comments here and there. This is a genuine interest with no intend to mock, troll or anything like that. Thanks in advance for the feedback. What do you feel an employee working at a McDonald's register should make? How about Starbucks? Does the establishment matter? I see people reference the increase in productivity not being inline with the increase in pay. I work as a Controls Engineer (industrial automation and logistics), how much of the increase do you feel comes from labor force vs technology? Do you think companies should have a cap on their earning potential? As employ it is easy to see things from the employees point of view, has…
I'm arguing with someone that claims employers (EDIT: in the US) cannot tell an employee to work at a store the employee doesn't want to work at, or transfer them to an office in a different city. He seems to think this is impossible because it would be literal slavery, ignoring the (I thought) obvious fact that refusing would lead to being fired, which is a choice that actual slaves don't have. So I'd appreciate any stories about “You can go work at this other location, or find another job with a different employer.” I have pointed out the thousands of articles on people working from home during the pandemic being told to return to the office when they don't want to, but since this person seems to have trouble seeing when situations are analogous and when they're not, I'd like to just avoid the “But that's different” response.
”I like capitalist because it gives me hope that i can work hard and one day become rich”.
Found out 2 days ago we were having a mandatory meeting at work today at 2:30 During said meeting (which lasted 20 mins), we were told our boss (owner of the stores) paid $1.1m in labor alone. Prior to this we were told that our dm would love to give us $20 an hour but said right now that isn’t feasible. But there’s only 5 stores they own. Running on being up for 23.5 hours now so forgive any errors but I just wanted to share this tidbit of info we were told. The store I work at (private company but I guess it would be considered a franchise since there’s 5 stores? Idk) has 11 employees. Idk about the other stores but yeah. Just wanted to share. Going to sleep now. Fuck the man!
