I don’t live to work
There has to be more than this, working full time for 30+ years but only to retire when my body has withered and they no longer have use of me. I want better for the next generation I went to college got a degree, got a full time job, and for what? Am I supposed to be satisfied? To work is not to live , but this is the cycle
Something pretty shitty and toxic happened to my company last year when they brought in a manager to slot between the director, who was super nice, and my manager, who let us self manage and upskilled us and empowered us to do our jobs to the point that we received awards and recognition for our work. Life was bliss and I planned to retire there. So new manager came in and announced we needed a “shake up” – if I could see their job description I would guess it said something along the lines of “needlessly trim fat to make it look like you had any real impact on the company”. During covid they made outlandish requests to get our office fully open and functioning at maximum capacity when everyone was advised to stay at home. Nice director was taking a back seat and said new manager was allowed to…

The Dawn of Everything by David Graeber
A while ago I picked up the last book by David Graeber, one of my favorite non fiction authors. The book is, again, a revelation of how screwed up our current society actually is. The stories of the Wendat nation paint an image of a way is living I would love to return to. At least for the social structure. No one in that society ever did anything against their will. Even their leaders could not force others to do their bidding. Wealth could not be converted into power. And members of that society were all eloquent debaters. I strongly recommend reading that book
Lurker for a while but I still don’t want to believe policies that should help workers can be twisted so much. I just got let go from my job due to (what seems like their fault) an improper filing of FMLA. They had me get this filled out for a period of time in which I had tested positive for COVID. I also work with geriatric patients very closely so of course I took the work week off. Not trying to kill your grandparents. However, I also have fibromyalgia and while I haven’t had a flare up for years-I got a debilitating one that took me out for two days this last week. (Partially due to the extreme stress and increased workload they had dropped on us within the last 2 months. But also anxiety and depression made worse by the loss of a close family member recently.) They informed…
I recently went to ask my boss for a raise, I haven't received a raise in 3 years while my responsibilities have only gone up. I was told to go if I wasn't happy working there, I have been working there for 10 years. My coworkers have received raises so I'm fairly sure they are trying to get me to quit to avoid paying me severance. On the other hand I know that they have been artificially reducing sales or not including full sales in order to receive subsidies up to 75% of wages. Here in Canada there needed to be a 50% drop in sales to qualify for the subsidies, I work at a restaurant and when the pandemic hit we geared towards take out which resulted in minimal losses in revenue 5% tops and I know this from sales reports. They also get rent subsidies so they are…
