Do HR departments from similar industries talk to each other?

This is not the first time I have this impression, it happened before when I left my internship and a HR representative from another company called me out of nowhere to do an interview. The 'problem' was, I did not apply to any jobs in that company and I have no idea how she got my contact. Now I'm in a similar situation, trying to get out of my current job and was fortunate enough to be interviewed by a company that is not exactly in the same industry, but share similarities. Turns out I have a big chance to be hired and lately it feels like my upper management KNOWS. How? IDK, never mentioned it to anyone. Am I crazy or do they actually talk to each other?

Where we are and where we should be

Let me preface this by saying that I am a physician and I benefit from our capitalistic society. I have worked plenty of shitty, low paying jobs along the way. I went straight from high school to medical school to residency and did not finish my training (and start really earning money) until I was 29 years old. I chose to work at a federally qualified health center to work with an underserved population out of residency, transitioned to working in the emergency department, and I am a board certified addiction medicine physician because I choose to help those who society ignores. I still have a good quality of life and benefit from our capitalistic approach to healthcare, even though I think it is wrong. As we benefit from increased automation and our society has an abundance in resources, this should translate into universal health care, food, and housing as…

I am burning out from work in Hungary

Small rant The average wage is around 1,125 forints or 3.5 dollars for an hour of basic work like a cashier or gardener or construction even in Budapest where you would expect it to be higher. Austria is a 3 hour drive and one can EASILY earn around 14 Euros an hour or 15 dollars .. and one can quite quickly get onto a much better healthcare plan and unemployment benefits. The sad part is most supermarket food prices in both countries are the same… things like white bread, eggs, milk , some vegetables will be cheaper but almost everything else equal price or more expensive when it comes to quality. .. i had to come back to Hungary a while ago to help my partner and our kid and because of some laws and things that happened in Austria. So now I'm really waiting for it to open up more…

Forced Gratitude Meetings

I’m a low-level Account Manager at a really successful start up company. I do not make much money but need to feed my family. Each week, all 50 employees have to login to Zoom for a “Win / Gratitude Meeting.” The owner calls on each employee, who has to name one work “win” for the week, and one thing they’re grateful for. Usually the gratitude part is like a God damned Oscar speech where employees dole out endless drivel about how great so and so coworker is. It’s really fake and corny, not to mention no one is ever thankful for me. I just sit there listening to everyone circle jerk one another while I sit there and try to think of whatever b.s. I’m gonna say that week. I look at everyone’s faces perplexed that they can really enjoy or be into this. And then the owners literally cry…

Not working is still a lot of work.

I love the idea of not having to work, but the truth is that not working is also a lot of work, you just work for yourself. There's nothing wrong with that except it's not always easy to do that. I think old fashioned communes had the right idea before they went sideways. Honestly though, “it takes a village” is true.

How can I prove that I was discriminated against, and that an employer is not “equal opportunity”?

Basically I was wearing a headscarf (the way I wrap them in the winter makes me look like a hijabi, I’m aware of this because I’m routinely mistaken for a hijabi) and went into a Day’s Inn to pick up an application. I was told they were not hiring… but the week before I went in with my hair showing and was told they needed someone for the front desk overnight. When I called the next day (EDIT: after being told they were not hiring) they said they were hiring and needed someone at the front desk overnight, again /: I do not want to work at a place that is managed by Islamaphobes, so fuck that job, but I think I was (however incorrectly) profiled and I want to report it. Any tips? Happened in Virginia, US.
