This happened a few months ago. To put it plainly, I put in my two weeks notice to the dealership I worked for in the morning and then I was “fired” a few hours later. I live in an ‘at will’ state so it’s legal. They could have escorted me off the lot immediately before gathering my things (a little over $20k in tools) but thankfully I was able to talk my way into having time to get my stuff. I’ve always been a person that challenges authority when I see something wrong (people being taken advantage of, discrimination, lack of integrity etc.). I believe them not wanting me to tell the truth to my co workers is what sparked them not accepting my notice.
I left for an independent shop which put me in a bind because I had to find a tool box and tool cart to fit all my stuff (my dealer had built in boxes). Everything worked out in the end logistically because my new shop needed me right away and I was able to get something temporary from Home Depot and Harbor Freight.
This is literally the first time that an employer hasn’t accepted my two weeks and told me to leave right away. I was really surprised so I did some research and found that this is pretty common these day. Just be careful guys and gals. Once you’re no longer welcome on company property then your belongings are technically their belongings. This is what my HR rep told me anyway so I don’t how true it is but I’d rather be safe than sorry.
For those that are curious, I left this dealership because I didn’t agree with putting profit over people. I also saw blatant disregard and neglect in quality of work from techs and it was never corrected or disciplined. I’m not a great tech but I really care about the work I perform and I take my fuck ups seriously. My new shop has advisors and techs that care because the owner takes care of us so it’s nice to be a part of a place that takes care of people.
