Antiwork

Being a “Manager” was the worst experience ever.

I finally can share this with people and let it off my chest. Being a manager made me lost faith in people. Living in Mexico I joined an “advergames” company as a game developer. Our previous manager disappeared due to some problems with the bottle and since I picked up his work during his absence I was promoted to: Director of Programming. So, being a manager destroyed my will, almost made.me quit game development. During that year I always looked up for my team and took care for them because I have always been as anti-work as life has allowed me to. (Altho I recently leant about the term) But fucking assholes, hiring was pain, I had to constantly fight my boss so I could get decent wages for the new hires. They wouldn't pay us overtime, and I did not want to abuse my team so I would stay…

(Altho I recently leant about the term)

But fucking assholes, hiring was pain, I had to constantly fight my boss so I could get decent wages for the new hires.

They wouldn't pay us overtime, and I did not want to abuse my team so I would stay late for them to leave early, and only request them for help if it was absolutely necessary.

One time, me and a young GameDev had to work late to fix up a VR game designed for hot wheels 50th anniversary. We stayed until midnight making sure things were error-proofed, tested on site. When we were done I called the PM to call a Uber for this kid (because he did like a 2 hour commute everyday, but obviously there is no more public transport at night)… AND SHE FUCKING REFUSED BECAUSE IT WAS $50 USD.

I fucking screamed at her, how was this possible. The kid started worrying and he said “I will call my parents to pick me up”. NO WAY JOSE. His parents are like 70years old. It would have been an abuse to make elder people drove two hours to pick up their kid and then two hours back home, so I did what a decent person would do: give this kid a ride home.

Filled up my tank, told the PM to fuck herself and that I wanted them to pay for my gas money, dropped this kid home at around 2am, arrived home at 3:30 am, slept until 6 am and drove back to work(commutes are long in CDMX)

That day, radicalized me. That day something broke in me.

I gave my notice and I was kind enough to give a THREE MONTH NOTICE because I was a “Director” and they wanted to get a replacement. They didn't get a replacement and pushed me and my team to the limit. We all burnt, we all walked out the same day.

They eventually hired more people, but I find confort knowing that the walkout affected their relationship with their customers so much they went bankrupt a year after.

I hope they fuck themselves every time they breathe.
