Bootlicking culture at work

Alright, I think I've lurked enough. Gonna share a little something on the work culture in the country where I currently work. This country is perhaps the stereotype of living in absolute luxury, that is not the US or anywhere in Europe. Here's a couple of instances I can share with you: Literally every boss, manager, executive is addressed or referred to as (name) Sir/Ma'am. When I came in, I straight up asked for their names, shook their hand as I introduced myself, and called them as their names. They couldn't so much as process that I didn't add a “sir” or “ma'am” suffix. I don't work in the military. This is done even outside of work – and I wish you could see the look on their faces. Alright, I think I've lurked enough. Gonna share a little something on the work culture in the country where I currently work.

This country is perhaps the stereotype of living in absolute luxury, that is not the US or anywhere in Europe.

Here's a couple of instances I can share with you:

  1. Literally every boss, manager, executive is addressed or referred to as (name) Sir/Ma'am. When I came in, I straight up asked for their names, shook their hand as I introduced myself, and called them as their names. They couldn't so much as process that I didn't add a “sir” or “ma'am” suffix. I don't work in the military. This is done even outside of work – and I wish you could see the look on their faces.

  2. When a person of senior rank or position gives a direction, there's almost no questioning, and the world turns into a yes sir no sir thing again. Screw up? Blame one person, except the senior member whose decision it was anyway. Why? “Respect”.

  3. My absolute favourite: When a person of senior rank or position is leaving the company, a farewell party is held – at which speeches praising their every move to the point of sounding like people kiss the ground upon which they stand.

This is then followed by photos, and a similar thing happening on social media. No kidding – it sounds almost like a form of worship.

With all this, does any work get done?

THAT'S a story for another day.

Well. Rant over.
