I work for an accounting firm on a salaried position. I also have a shit ton of responsibilities within the company that usually take 10 – 15 hours. The boss schedules time after I get off for a meeting where she tells us we need to put in a minimum of 38 hours of client work per week. Okay, could’ve told me that in an email.
She then calls me the next day and tells me some others were asking if it would be okay to work more hours to get internal projects done. So she’ll “allow” me to work on internal projects like business development over 40 hours. Keep in mind there is no comp time, additional pay, or even a commission for bringing in new clients. I just said, thanks for letting me know. I won’t be doing those internal responsibilities if they take more than 2 hours. Actually I’ve already worked over 40 hours the last few weeks just to help my team because I knew they were stressed. But no more.
I wasted to much of my life working “extra” hours at shit I hated. I don’t do that anymore. I bought a house for cheap and will have it paid for in 2024. I work freelance projects on the side to make that happen so I can essentially retire way early and only work some small freelance jobs to pay for food, other basic necessities and travel. Plus I can do stuff I like when I freelance. I have zero desire to waste any more of life on shit I hate.
*BTW, boss babe is what she calls herself, I’m not demeaning her or even being disrespectful. She’s not wrong, she is a babe. All things considered she’s a good person who is also caught up in this rat race and she doesn’t know how to get off the train. Mixed metaphors I know. I’m sure her boss is making her life hell which is why she’s pushing this shit. But as they say, that’s not my fucking problem.
