Boss refuses to let husband fly, makes him drive 12+ hours in company car.

My husband has been with his job for years and is so burned out, anxious and depressed. He’s been made to work 80+ hours a week on salary. Other than constantly being on calls and computer work from 7am-11pm or later, he’s made to travel to other stores in his company owned vehicle. Some of the stores are in other states, 12-15 hours away. The last time, he decided to fly instead. Yesterday his boss called and bitched him out, letting him know that flying is not acceptable. He explained that driving was time for reflection and communication (these 12 plus hours are plagued with work calls after work calls.) I feel like this can’t be legal. I’m very concerned for obvious reasons but also because I’ve personally witnessed him almost fall asleep behind the wheel multiple times. How can this be legal?!
