So I work at a non-profit for less than 50k a year. I enjoy what I do and like most people who work in these fields “I don’t do it for the money”. I am a salaried employee and I like salary for the flexibility as I’m busy with four kids and a wife and never complain about working 10-12 hour shifts if there is a need. Also don’t need “at-a-boys” to do so as I understand that salary does have those “days”.
However, I have a boss (Lord Business is what I will refer to them as) that is the epitome of a boomer and is a pro at micromanaging. I had a week where I had to stay home and watch kids and there were a couple of dropped balls while away but nothing life or death.
Come back and Lord Business pulls me in and has the nerve to ask why I always seem to take care of the kids while they are sick. I explain to Lord Business that my wife is a school teacher and they don’t really have the luxury of calling in sick but that is a whole different r/antiwork post. Lord Business just replies “I need you here, your staff needs you here and that is why you are salary”. I have never been so pissed at an employer.
I’m so tired of this boomer generation who think that all there is to life is work, work, work. I’m grateful that I have a job but, I work to live and don’t live to work. I won’t apologize that your generation has gotten it all wrong.
Also, I went straight to HR and of course it went nowhere. Looking for something different but there is not much out there in my field and have been turned down 3-4 times looking into different fields. I’ll be fine and have it so much better than a lot of other people but still so mad about Lord Business having the guts to insinuate that my wife needs to do more in my household and needed to share the shenanigans!
