So a little information about my job, it’s an e-commerce business, small business with a small team. I thought it was a good catch after being in a stressful field during the pandemic.
I am brought in as a warehouse lead and then instructed it’s a warehouse manager role which is kind of weird but in all I didn’t think much of it. Then I find out later that it’s a salary position, I was like what the heck you stated it was hourly. First flag, they stated for the probationary period it’s hourly then after they bring you in with benefits at salary. Physical labor at salary with no overtime paid yikes. I take it cause shit I am in it, but I probably should have left. But as time goes on my boss starts to show his true colors, condescending, big ego, beyond unprofessional and demeaning and unapologetic. The type to be like, regardless if I am wrong I am right. He poked me here and there with passive aggressive shit in regards to my work and how I am managing the warehouse but never offered support or constructive criticism. But I get dumped with more of his work. Apparently I suck at what I do but I am able to do his work too, so I don’t suck that much I guess. Anywho going onto this year I get sick with Covid, being a small business with a 3 man team when I get back we fall way behind. Lose a family member due to the Covid I caught while being out of state and can’t go to her funeral because boss states, “hey family is family but we are behind here and stuff has gone to shit but if you gotta go then you make that decision”. So I am like shit I can read between the lines. So I stay and don’t go, try to catch us up on the work, but keep getting more work piled on with no support. My mood by this time has begun to be negative and I let my employees know we ain’t getting help and we gotta find a way to manage and hopefully they see after all our hard work that we need people. Finally today he brings me in after I miss a day and demands I find an order sent out that was shipped incorrectly and somehow bring it back. I do the research and bring it to him and then finally, he brings up my work ethic again while going through my work and states, “You know I have been hearing you have been negative and been whining and bitching in the back,” I am kind of like, okay we are going there today and ask to speak to him in private since a coworker is right there hearing this play out. He states fine, as coworker leaves and I sit to talk, I let him know the deal; since I came here I haven’t been given support. I haven’t been given help of any kind, that I have come to him and asked for help. He gets upset and states you have not done shit and have been lazy doing nothing. I let him know that is straight up a lie and then tell him what I have been doing to catch us up since I came back. He tries to deviate to a different topic at hand by stating how I went to the owner and not him and how I let the owner know I have been overwhelmed and had no support. I let him know that I tried talking to him prior about the lack of support before going to the owner, but he would not listen. He then tries to deviate again and I tell him to stay on the topic at hand. He then gets up from his chair kicks a couple of boxes next to him and says “if you talk to me like that again I will kick your ass.” He then states “keep talking.” I explain to him and raise my hands up to show I am not going to fight and tell him, we are in a work environment, to remain professional, that it doesn’t need to go that far and to keep calm. I’m thinking he gets the picture and sits back down but he continues to badmouth me and states I no longer report to him. Then continues to talk his shit. I say my peace and leave and then report this to the owner immediately after. He talks to my boss then to me, but I let him know I don’t feel safe with my boss around me and that this isn’t the first instance where he has had this type of altercation and that my concern is the next time he snaps he will actually try to physically hurt me. I explain my concerns but the owner doesn’t hear it. He has known the boss for over three years and he’s known me for about a year.
What can I do to protect myself?
I already sent an email prior to me speaking with him and documented the incident in case they tried to sweep it under the rug like it was just an outburst.
Shit who do I call, I have done everything I can, sent an email and recorded the incident, is this all I can do until I find another job. I can’t just quit due to this being my main money maker.
