Boss told all of us we aren’t allowed to call into work for period cramps.

I have an outdoor, manual labor job and really bad period pain. It's extremely hard to work outside (9 hour shift) when my cramps are that bad. Recently me and all my coworkers were told we weren't allowed to call in because of cramps. This is obviously unethical in my opinion but is there any law against things like this? I'm not thinking of taking legal action really, I'm just curious.
