Boss told me I wasn’t allowed to take leave because we’re understaffed despite me always turning up for work and doing my job properly

For context, I work as a bartender in a busy bar in NYC. We’ve has loads of staff turnover the last couple of months because people found better jobs, or didn’t like working in a bar, or just my boss being a bit of a control freak. So obviously we have periods where we’re a bit understaffed but we’ve kind of gotten used to it. So I haven’t had time off for ages because of the staffing shortages and I asked for time off for my nieces birthday and my boss straight up said no saying we’re short staffed and that I’ll have to miss her birthday. I said that isn’t fair as I’ve been helping been out to cover shifts since I started here. Boss said he doesn’t care. I faked a positive covid test so I could go to my niece’s birthday and have applied to 100 jobs…

I faked a positive covid test so I could go to my niece’s birthday and have applied to 100 jobs in like 2 days since the conversation with my boss. I’ve got 3 interviews so far but I feel slightly bad about leaving them though so I’m not sure what I should do

EDIT: Do you think there's any chance he might have just misunderstood what I was asking for?

EDIT 2: Boss has just fired me because I'm not back from covid yet
