Boss tries to tell me how he would knock me out in his day over something I had nothing to do with.

So, basically my boss Steve called me one day and asked me why it took two guys to replace a broken part that only took one guy to install. I work on fridges and freezers and this was a freezer in a fast food joint. Here's the thing, I did the original install, and the part was faulty, it had failed within 1 week of install. What had happened was Frank, another tech who went back after the part failed, had called the office to get someone else there. It was lunch rush and they were in and out of the freezer, so he wanted to finish up asap. Since I had just finished clearing up a call, they figured since that I know the site I could go back and help this guy out. So I head back there after my coworker called for backup. We fixed it.

I get a call about 1 week later from my boss. He asks why the hell it took two people. I said, “well the access up top is tight and there's so much junk in the way, it takes about 20 minutes to get into place…” He stopped me there and told me that was bullshit. He got pissed and started ripping into me about how this is a one man job, how I'm lazy and that in his day if you pulled this shit with a journeyman (lead tech/foreman type role for those who don't know) that he would smacked me upside the head with a hammer or knocked me out.

I didn't say a word addressing that and I said I don't get why you're mad, dispatch sent the call to me to go help Frank, was I supposed to say no to the call?? He paused for a second and goes, you weren't the original guy who got called back? I told him no. He goes, “oh okay, bye.”

What the fuck??? So I had a meeting with our company and HR and I told them everything he said to me. I told them that it made me very uncomfortable because what am I supposed to say to that? I asked them how they would respond if I had said, you could try to knock me out but what makes you think I couldn't knock you out first? Or what makes you think I'd let you hit me? Of course management and HR went into a bit of a frenzy and said you can't say that. I asked them why it's okay for him to say that but I couldn't respond in that manner. I told them that if I ever get a thinly veiled threat again about something so minute in the company that I'll tell the rest of technicians and that shut them up. This company is literally nothing without us. They can't outsource our jobs, they can't just hire cheaper labour. It's a skilled trade and they have zero leverage.

As for the boss he never called me again after that.
