Broke my finger – work wants me to make up time?

I work in healthcare, so we have a system where you can work double shifts on the weekend and be considered full time, which is what I’ve been doing as a student. There’s also a loose policy that if someone calls out on their weekend shift, they have to make the weekend up (this is for regular staff, to ensure the weekends aren’t a train wreck staffing wise) This hasn’t been well followed but there’s a new DON that apparently means business, so when I called her to say I broke a finger and my doctor wrote me a note excusing me from work until I could attend a therapy session to check the tendons in my hand, she immediately asked me what days I would be making up my weekend. Um. First of all, the policy is to ensure we have weekend staffing, not random tuesday staff. But most of all, I’m not calling out so I can go to a party or something. I have excused medical leave. I guess it doesn’t make any sense to me- what if I was out for two or three weeks, would I just have a pile of shifts to make up?? Why do I have sick time etc if I can’t get any time off even with a broken bone and doctor’s note??

Im going to be calling the scheduler and HR to review the policy, but she said “they’ll just tell you the same thing because I’m the new DON and I’m going to let them know.” In the meantime, what do you guys thing about this?
