So my brother works maintenance at an apartment complex. They recently got bought by another company. And just today he was given notice of his termination. He was also told he'd have until Wednesday of next week to vacate the apartment he and his family are staying at rent free as part of his benefits from the previous employer.
We live in California. And so far what I've found is that you basically don't have any protection in this case. They have the right to evict you right away. Simply because you didn't technically have a lease and weren't paying. If he had been paying a lease for more than a year. Then he'd be entitled to 60 days notice. But since it was free, it's basically FU. Why the hell is that a thing? Why wouldn't people living rent free get at least a 30 day notice? It's a family for crying out loud. And now they have to find a place at one of the most difficult times to get a place. While being unemployed at that!
Anyone know if there's anything they can do?
