Can an employer ask a previous employer if I placed a notice of resignation.

I’m so sick of the unfairness and favoritism where I’m currently at, that I’m ready to drop the job altogether without giving a timed notice. I’m doing Lyft to supplement income (loving it and making more money), but I want a full time job at this other company. Are companies allowed to ask previous employers if I gave any kind of notice before quitting?
