Can anybody help?

My friend works for a delivery company in Manchester, UK. Today when he arrived for work at the usual and scheduled start time of 07:00, he found the building locked and dark with nobody inside. He waited for 45 minutes in the rain trying to contact various managers with no luck. He went home and told his managers he was doing so, and wouldn’t come back as he doesn’t drive and his workplace is a 2 hour walk (this would be in pouring rain aswell) from his house. His managers have since contacted him saying if he doesn’t come to work he could face “further action.” He obviously doesn’t want to lose his job but feels he is being made a fool out of. Can somebody please help and let me know if he has a leg to stand on if he is fired for not coming in? Thanks
