Can employers tell when you quit your last job/what’s the likelihood they’ll look into that?

I quit my job several months ago to focus on my mental health and am now looking to unfortunately rejoin the workforce and don’t want to have to deal w the usual bs song and dance in my interviews of explaining the war crime of having a gap in my resume. Can I just “still be at my current position” to avoid this question and also give me additional bargaining, as any offer made to me has to be considered in face of the benefits and pay being received at my “current job”? Has anyone else done this, and should I worry abt dates and my lack of current employment showing up on your average background or is it really only a worry for ‘big fish’ type jobs and your occasional bastard who will go through an intrusive third party?
