I work for an outsourcing housekeeping company in NYC. They pay minimum wage so obviously we don’t have the best people working here. Sometimes people are late for work or do a no-call-no-show and it makes more extra work for people or the company has to run around looking for a last minute replacement. To stay on top of things, they’ve created an app that tells them how long it takes each employee to get to work. Employees have to “check in” on the app before they leave their house so the company knows that they are going to be to work on time. If employees don’t “check in” before the time it takes to get to work the app gives employees a message that our shift has been cancelled and they’re find a replacement. (If your commute is 30 minutes you need to check in 30 minutes before your shift (so they know you’re showing up on time) or they replace you. They’d rather alert the hotel that the employees are late then being yelled at by the hotel that not enough staff showed up.
What are your thoughts on this? If I’m required to check in then should I be paid for my time? Is this legal? (Yes I know we should find a better job/company)
