I am a speech-language pathologist working at an Early Intervention agency. For the first year of the pandemic, we provided all services via video call, which worked pretty well since our focus is on coaching families to utilize strategies in daily routines with their children. We started doing in-person visits with families last year, but at least one of my coworkers is fully remote for the foreseeable future due to an undisclosed health condition.
My husband was recently diagnosed with cancer and will be starting chemo soon. I asked to be fully remote in order to protect him from exposure to COVID as he will be vulnerable to severe complications if he gets it while undergoing chemo. My employer sat on the decision for two weeks before telling me “no”. The only reason I got for the denial was that they were concerned about the precedent it would set… I thought that by working at a non-profit I'd be spared from this kind of bullshit, but alas, all employers suck.
