My manager over-served a drunk regular, which led to a fight and me getting thrown down.
I’m a bartender in NYC. I work for a small bar/restaurant owned by a couple of guys. I refused to continue serving a customer at 3:00am last night. He was really drunk, and he’s a regular. He was fine with that and was just chatting amongst the others with a club soda. My manager comes over and pours him another. I protested quietly, and explained that he had been cut off already. I was told that we don’t leave our regulars with dry glasses. My guy has been over served before and it’s clear that his issue is feeling comfortable saying no. He’s never really been a problem. So, it’s about closing (3:45am at this point) and he’s trashed from the four other drinks my manager served him. He starts arguing with another customer and getting physical, I go over to break it up, and the man my regular is arguing with physically shoves me, so my customers knocked me down (trying to make me sit, to get me out of the way). Managers comes over and settles things, everybody pays and leaves. Manager tells me it’s my fault for refusing to serve, and said I’m a “cry baby” over a shove. Soooo I’m a small woman, 5’, and barely 100 pounds. I have bruising on my back, ass, and shoulders. I made a copy of the other guys credit card slip in case I decide to file a report. I don’t know, I should quit. I’m just sick and fucking tired. It’s just on to the next shit manager.
