Chicago // Fired because word got to my employer that I was looking for a new job

TL;DR told a coworker that I’ve been looking to make a career transition. Boss found out, got fired after a conversation with him about it. Do I qualify for unemployment in this situation? I did not willingly leave, I made it very clear that my intention wasn’t to leave until I at least had something else lined up first

Job wants me to work 6 days prior to the return date on my doctors note.

I work for a daycare, where my young child also attends. This place, like MANY other childcare centers in the US, is severely understaffed. My child has been sick twice since she started attending this daycare (right around the same time I started working there) the first time I had to leave my class where I attend part time in the morning to pick her up. The second time I ended up needing to leave work with her early because she had a fever. We ended up going to the emergency clinic two nights ago and got notes saying we could both return to work/school 9 days later. There was no formal diagnosis (negative tests for COVID, Flu, RSV, etc) but we were advised to not return to the childcare facility until all symptoms were cleared. Despite having already sent the doctors notes and confirming that we would not be…

Reminder: When anyone in management asks you “how your experience has been” or similar, make sure to mention what impacts the workers.

For example today I am staying at a hotel and management messaged me asking how my stay was. I said, “Fine, except you should get your front desk staff chairs. Standing all day is rough on them.” They trying to argue their position saying that, “We like our staff to be able to greet everyone when they enter.” To which I replied, “Your disabled worker in a wheelchair managed to do that just fine. You're only being hard on the other workers because you think sitting implies lazy.” They had no further response. It doesn't actually change anything, but if they are asking for our opinion we should always take that opportunity to tell them how we really feel every single time we can. It makes an impact, plus it feels good. 🙂 Fight the good fight.

I just found out I’ll never be paid on par with my peer

I have been working for a company that I thought I really liked for several years now. I have absolutely amazing performance reviews, have trained all of the incoming people, and I am the person that everyone goes to when something breaks or someone doesn't know what is going on. Recently, there was an opportunity that opened up. This opportunity is a significant increase to the workload, but the listed salary range appeared to reflect that. The job is in the same department and even reports up to the same person. When I applied, I received an interview request within an hour and they essentially closed the listing. I was told by the hiring manager that I was the top choice and she was pleased I applied because I already knew the job. I got through the interview process and received a verbal offer…only to find the salary was significantly…

I work at a university and its like mini boomers at work. Report, report reports . Had one report me last semester for being “rude” Stop being impatient then. You can't escape retail/customer service hell

DAE feel like this can’t just be…it?

I know I probably sound ungrateful. I have a warm bed, roof over my head, and food on the table. I’m able to take 1 or 2 vacations a year with proper budgeting. Like everyone else, money is tight right now but I’m maintaining. I work all week, workout when I can, do some chores and housework on the weekend, try to see friends when I can, rinse, and repeat. So why do I feel like this can’t just be “it”? Why do I feel unsatisfied? Routinely cycle through depression at the monotony. I don’t love my career but it pays my bills. A career change to ‘do what I love’ would be ideal but the career I’m interested in doesn’t pay enough to survive (social work/therapy unless your a psychologist which is a lot of schooling to commit to when I have bills without getting into the debt of…

“Customer service, how may I help you?”

My sister sent me a photo of the bathroom at her receptionist office job. Yes, that is a phone, and yes, she is expected to take calls while taking a shit. Can’t make this stuff up.
