There was a post here about this. And a lot of comments suggest that there's a lot of propaganda to make people believe renting is cheaper than owning a home, mainly because of “unforseen expenses”. So, here are some real world examples; I found rental listings on Trulia, pulled up tax and property records from the county, and found other data to put this together. First thing to keep in mind is when you rent, you're not building equity. You can rent a spot for 30 years at $804/month ($289k), and can never get a penny of that back, except maybe $804 in security deposit back. Mortgage a home for 30 years at $804/month and assuming the value is the same as the day you mortgaged, you have $160,000 in equity. If your home is worth $100,000 more, you have $206,000 in equity. Spend $35k to build an addition that…

Idiot coworker with hero complex
This idiot is constantly looking for problems to solve, that only he can solve so he can swoop in and be the saviour. The only problem is that they're always non problems and sadly I have no real way to prove it. Whenever I call him out he gaslights me and uses a lot of overly complicated technical jargon to make it seem like I just don't grasp the full complexity of the situation. A little game he loves to play is after inventing his fake problems, he then goes to management and tells them how he just solved this enormous (non-) issue and how great it is for everyone. Today I finally found definitive proof that he's full of shit. Not that I didn't already know. We work in biopharma and his whole schtick has been that our predecessors couldn't do their jobs. There were some problems but somehow…
So, Open Call Interview Anyone?
Soo, my spouse and I simply loathe looking for jobs in the city due to travel, bad jobs, few decent jobs or decent pay. Recently my spouse got a response to his delivery driver application and I honestly assumed the worst that it might be a group interview situation based off of the email he got and how many responses they received. With a name like Open Call I expected it to be Zoom or such related. No it was much worse, they expected my husband and how many other people to show up at a location, at a specific time and deliver meds… For no compensation whatsoever in a HOPE to get the job for up to an hour. It was all “first come, first serve.” They sent this IN AN EMAIL for you to waste your time, gas and potentially run their business without having to pay people.…
Is it just me, or is all “hard work” ethics bullshit? Yes, an employee is meant to put in quality work. HOWEVER : why does this mean many bosses also to do everything to compromise the integrity of that quality. With requirements to: default availabilty on demand, work brutal hours, make you a yes man, forgo your rights (which given one cycle becomes the default “standard”) ignore trauma in favor of work promote a work culture that mocks lower earners as “unmotivated” making employment deliberately scarce and arbitrarily creating “qualification requirements”. Don’t forget they are even in the bio sciences field too: Some commercial biotech places literally fire anyone who points out potential issues or questions authority. They even put up signs saying that wages are strictly confidential and should not be discussed. There might be a need for more sciences jobs but they deliberately underhire and overwork. Fuck; why…
So this is happing now as I type, so excuse the Grammer and runoff sentences. I am doing this on my phone. Long story short I took last week off by calling in 2 days and taking 3 days vacation. In the employee handbook I have a 24 hour notice to schedule vacation and no notice to call in sick. For reference I have 160 hours of vacation and 40 hours of sick time in a year. Anyway I heard he was telling everyone in my department except for me in a meeting to not take as much time off as me. So I thought if he wanted to play petty I would as well. I just asked for Wednesday thru Friday off and my direct supervisor who works under him approved it. Tomorrow morning I have a meeting with him and my direct supervisor who just approved it about…
I inherited an absolute nightmare at my current job as a shipping coordinator. No one knows what they are doing (including me) everything is late/back ordered and there is no set process to get anything done. I am confident I can do the job if given a fighting chance… but do I want to? I have enough money saved, I can restart my job search… but I'm not naive enough to assume there is any green grass anywhere. I just want the people I'm working with to put forth some effort. The same process I have been instructed to follow since I started is now no longer the process (as of today). The person who would normally check up on the production side of things is now expecting me to oversee those follows ups. I honestly just don't care enough anymore. I always try to do a good job, so…
