Local trendy business pays less than minumum wage because they have a tip jar.

They are not servers but they do hand food products over a counter, or work a register. They are paid 6 dollars an hour and a share of tips. Obviously their salary always exceeds minimum wage with the tips, but I find this very shady. It is the sort of job where you would expect everyone in there is *at least* getting paid minimum wage, probably guess they get paid a little more. So when customers come in and tip, they think they are giving these workers a bonus. Instead the owner only pays them 6 dollars an hour and lets the tip jar supplement their salary. ** Edit: Minimum wage is 7.25 an hour Thoughts? I am sure this is legal, but it seems sketchy af to me? yes no?

Am I really asking for that much?

I’ve been lurking in this sub for awhile now and I finally have something to add to this sub. For the past 7 months I’ve been going to technical school to learn machining and I really enjoy it but I’m starting to get fed up with the bootlicking my teacher is pushing. A guy who finished this class which is a year long was making 16 an hour without any overtime. He gets him a new job at a shop that does parts for NASA and has 20 CNC machines and they’re gonna start him at 18 an hour. I tell my teacher 18 is not enough for a guy with a year of school under his belt and a little experience, it should be more like 20 out of school, especially when guys who drive a forklift are making 20 with maybe a year of experience. He proceeded to…

MY BOSS JUST MADE ME CLEAN HIS SHIT FROM THE FLOOR AND I DONT THINK I CAN EVER GO BACK AGAIN

I am not in an industry where I am usually cleaning up messes in bathrooms, let alone my boss’s shit. Think office type job. Nor am I really opposed to cleaning up messes – you gotta do what you gotta do sometimes. But this was too much and definitely not my job. But this wasn’t in the bathroom. Oh no, this was in the middle of the office floor. First off, let’s get something straight: I despise this man. From the very beginning of my job he would belittle me and expected me to read his mind when it came to doing work for him bc he rarely ever gave me something to do, then complains that I’m not looking out for the company when I’ve been working pretty damn hard to do what I was brought on to do. Not to mention he spouts republican bullshit about the left…

Can I tell my boss off through a text?

I Knew I was working for a terrible boss but I have proven that I was a good worker. Right before I was fired, I worked 17 days in a row giving up my days iff to help out my coworkers. The day I was fired, I was scheduled to work 6am-11pm because I had to go to my drill weekend. An hour before I was to leave, he asked if I could stay a little longer. I said no for the first time. Right at the end of my shift, he grabbed me to cone with him to HR and I was fired for failure to meet expectations l. I asked for specific expectations that I failed to meet and that it wasn’t because of my work ethic. They did not give me any. I finally got a new job. I still was ticked off that I was not given…

Managers can’t keep mistreating people

So I got my first job over the summer last year, and I was super excited to have my own income as a teenager. I was making 11 an hour which was later increased to 13 an hour. I was working a lot, but I was fine with it because schedules help get me out of the house more often. I loved my job at Dairy Queen until my manager decided that instead of being a mature adult, he'd belittle me and mistreat me. Despite me checking with him a few days before that I was doing OK at my job and that no one had notable complaints that I should work on, he decided that instead of telling me as issues arrived, he'd save them all up and then text them to me all at once after I had to leave early because the entire building was full of…

Advice on asking for a raise

I am 37 and have been working various jobs for 20 years (over 25 if you count babysitting) and have never asked for a raise. My first annual review is coming up at my current company and I would like to ask for one. I thought of writing a letter to my boss that mentions the inflation as well as my accomplishments and accolades over the past year. Then I would request a range–like a 4 to 10 percent increase or something. I would give the letter to her a few weeks before my annual review, along with samples of my work and the required annual review paperwork, so she has time to think on it. Does this sound good to people here? Do you have any other advice? As I said, I'm a newbie at this. Thank you!

Workload has increased to the point that I’m extremely flustered and stressed every day, working long hours, and now my supervisor is asking if we want to work *more* if we’re compensated with a bonus structure.

I’m salaried and work for a small company. Lately the volume of our workload has increased, which is good for the business, but my boss is not interested in hiring anyone new at the moment. Every day I feel like I’m scrambling to get my projects done and am being pulled in 5 different directions. We don’t have enough time to do our internal initiatives (marketing for our own company) and my supervisor asked us today if we’d consider working additional hours for a bonus. I’m burnt out and stressed, and was just telling someone how I wish my company offered more time off (we only get 10 days PTO per year which includes vacation, sick time, and personal days). I want to look for a new job but by the time I’m done with work the last thing I want to do is stare at my computer. I know…

Navigating Stress Leave/FMLA

I took leave from work due to extreme burnout and anxiety that was driving suicidal thoughts. I took the right steps, I got an emergency consultation with a healthcare provider, they wrote me a note to excuse me from work and set me up with follow up appointments with a therapist and a psychiatrist. They also filled out FMLA because my workplace required it. Now navigating all of this was extremely taxing as this whole system feels antagonistic to someone suffering a mental health crisis. At this point I’ve met with the therapist, who was incredibly useless and when I tried to discuss not feeling ready to return to work she spoke over me and just told me to discuss with the psychiatrist. So I met with the psychiatrist and was prescribed medication and again when I tried to discuss not feeling ready to return, how I felt I would…
