It’s not greed, it’s the system working!

I just saw the post about Starbucks being able to give a huge bonus, the implication being that they are being greedy. It’s important to know that this is how the system is SUPPOSED to work! It’s not greed, it’s fulfilling an obligation. A corporation‘s obligation is to it’s shareholders, and it will do everything to maximize shareholder return. Everything. The only “good” things corporations do are to increase profile, retain people, get free publicity – I.e. things that will increase their market share and therefore increase share price. That is it. That’s how it’s supposed to work. Thats why the only way to make a corporation do the right thing is through legislation. Cap executive compensation. Mandate profit sharing with employees. Raise minimum wage. Improve protections across the board, Or tear it all down and replace with something better. Some form of democratic socialism seems most promising.

Looking for work is beyond stressful. A rant

Anyone feel like looking for work is not only stressful but a full time job itself? Like you have to apply and apply job post after job post, then you get either a couple offers all at once and its overwhelming to pick the best one you could OR you only get one offer and feel you are forced into this one job not knowing how it's going to go, and taking it even if you feel it's a very risky idea. You have to deal with wage haggling! As of late for example the only jobs that have responded so far only want to pay below $15/ hour. I need a job because I am going to be let go as soon as next week, and I cannot afford even a week without work. Dont even get me started on unemployment because in my state, they make it EXTREMELY…

Dumb shit my boss has said recently

Me- recently promoted senior maintenance technician for large indoor resort water park. Boss: I need you to start giving the other shifts items to do during their shift, please make sure it’s getting done. Me: after giving them said items l noticed acid was not being turned on in the mornings causing ph issues in the pools. I send out 1st and only group text to remind everyone acid needs to be checked to make sure it’s turned on daily. Boss: why did you ask them to check the acid? I think you are micromanaging. Few days later…after park is closed for the evening Boss: My wife looks like this (provides description) if you see her please radio me, I’ll be in the hot with (not his wife). Few weeks later…. Boss turns off phone, can’t be reached, major air quality issue arises at work. Bosses boss calls me so…

The celebrity Super Bowl Ads for crypto and Amazon make me really sad for other workers

As someone who supports the idea we shouldn't slave our lives away for less than livable wages, certain types of celebrities, mainly actors, have always been sort of the ideal end goal for workers in general. They get paid amazing well to follow their passion, yet also get ample down time. Plus they show the value of being in a union, as the pay rates help combat some of the inherently-exploitative nature of the film industry for up and coming actors. But to continue to see so many A-listers happily shill for terrible, anti worker companies just depresses me about what kind of future workers can have. The theory is that when you are financially valued appropriately, you can choose your work and act more morally, thereby forcing corporations to become better in order to get you to work for them. But these commercial spots just show that when you…

My “boss” is actually childishly refusing to talk to me because he’s mad about something he did

What the actual fuck. I work in construction, I am an estimator so I do the bidding, contracts, and all of the paperwork to set up the job in our system. So over a year ago we got the contract on a nice sized project (~2 million) and I had to turn in what we call a Schedule of Values, basically a detailed breakdown of the contract price among all of the components of that contract. At that time material costs were low and the general contractor wanted to pay material bills, so I went over it with my “boss” and printed out a sheet to show him the numbers, he approved it and I sent it to the general contractor. It ranged out to about 21% materials and 79% labor. Well as of the last year the materials prices have skyrocketed and as such, we are spending a lot…
