My aunt died a few weeks ago. I had a part time job (20 hrs/week) on top of my regular job. When I told my part time job I wasn’t coming in and why, my boss told me to choose my priority but if it wasn’t my job, I’d be terminated. I told him to terminate me, threw my smock at him, and walked out. The line of customers in line thought it was a joke until I really left. Upon my return home, I realized I had at least 20 text messages and a few voice mail messages asking me to come back. I responded to one stating I chose my priority and it wasn’t him. It was probably funnier to me in person but I thought I’d share.

I understand, this is mostly American subreddit, but I am still coming here, since this is the only community of this kind I have heard of. To start this off: I am graduating high school soon with 5 years of college ahead of me. And after everything I have seen/experienced (i attended hotel management school and my desired college is in a different field, proffesional translation) I came to a conclusion, that I will have to work trough college, unless I win in a lottery or something, and I am not looking forward to entering the workforce at all. Multiple managers sharing one braincell, terrible pay conditions (4euro per hour, 160 hours as a part-time worker, got paid like 560, they pocketed the rest, appearantly for food costs, while I was eating leftovers and accomodation, which almost fell on my head. This is from 2 work experiences I had during…
Someone took this redit thread and made it an article lol nice.
First Quarter Ends This Week
For context, one example: Cal-Maine Foods, which is the largest egg producer in the country reported revenue doubled and profit surged 718% last quarter because of sharply higher egg prices. They sold 1% more eggs than previously so its overall revenue rose 109%. Net income soared to $323.2 million from $39.5 million a year ago. Greedflation is still running rampant and companies are still using inflation as a tactic to price gouge consumers. Pay attention to the reports coming out soon regarding profits for first quarter.
“Passionate”
I just came across a job description that said they are looking for someone who is “passionate about paid advertising”. Part of my job is paid advertising and I don’t see how anyone in their right mind could be passionate about something like advertising. Why do companies expect people to be passionate about things like accounting, marketing, HR, etc? I just don’t see how it’s possible to be passionate about things like that.
Fuck “””low skill””” jobs
I've been in food service/retail jobs since I was 17 (I'm 22, and getting out this year – just waiting for my next (administrative) job to process my preclearance checks etc). I'm currently working at the best job I've ever worked and even still there are glaring issues lol, a polished shit is still a shit. I just had my schedule changed last-minute without being asked, we're always short staffed, we get searched twice a shift, etc. Preaching to the choir I'm sure but idk how they haven't realised that they're more likely to keep on staff if they actually treat their staff well… lol Idk just needed to complain. It's insane how much they try to exploit you, which is why it's so important to know your rights as an employee lol. And I'm not even living in the US, where I've been told everything is much worse low…
I need to break free
I'm 23 and for half my life have been working in several different jobs. While supporting my family I haven't been able to make any savings, so I have nothing in my pocket today. I applied for college and was given some money but that quickly ran out. I've worked retail, restaurants, labor, and specialty services. I hate earning $100 per hour and only being able to keep $20 of it. My time is worth more than that. I need help creating a freelance business or help finding well paying, non slave work. I'm sure everyone asks for the same thing, im not claiming to be special, just out of options. For my family's sake, anything would help. Thank you.
