My mother works in front-line adult social care for local government in the UK. Recently, the local authority she works for has been in discussions with trade unions about how they can essentially introduce pay cuts in order to continue to pay for services. When this was questioned, and in response to swathes of recent resignations and staff sickness, bosses had the audacity to tell my mum and colleagues that they “don’t work for [the council], they work for their community”. This translates to “we can keep treating you like shit and removing your support networks, and if you stop working or dare to complain, YOU’RE the asshole and are betraying the people in your care”. The heads-of-service all get their 6-figure salaries, but those on £20k a year need to take one for the team for the good of “the community”? Fuck off! The UK government and the current…

Give them hours to keep, then send pertinent information about schedules after those hours for before those hours. I’m scrambling and it’s my second fucking day.
Seems to me that our global financial system is fragile and collapse-vulnerable because it is kind of all built on imaginary things (digital being non-tangible and all) and mostly trust (which is in global short supply). Why not re-imagine this imaginary system to something that works for more than the richest people? I don’t have faith in the global economy because it seems like a huge Ponzi scheme that is about to topple— I also assume that if it does it will once again be propped up by more imaginary structures that disenfranchise most of us even further. So my question is… why? Why are we going along with this? Why aren’t we calling for something better? Why are we willing to accept that some people are born entitled to everything and others are born entitled to nothing based only on what our ancestors did before us? Why should your…
Bosses Live in the Army too
Not 100% sure this actually belongs here since the military in general is different than the real world where people respect at least a few of our rights, but here goes. I've been working on getting separated from the army for almost a year straight due to my lack of a stable mental health. Mentality wise, I'm one week into a two week notice, but I'm one of those weird people who just genuinely finds pleasure in working. I don't care about the praise, the false promises of promotions, etc., etc., it's purely a me thing. I love being dog ass tired at the end of the day and having either a really big job taken care of or a lot of little ones. Gives me a sense of value and a feeling of being worth a damn. Over Christmas, I tried to kill myself. Didn't tell anyone about…
Feeling stuck
I have been employed at a dog daycare for a little over 2 years now. A relatively small business with never really more than 40 staff members at once. Our “owner” also owns the lot our business sits in along with a few other small shops and a liquor store. Our general manager has (supposedly) a long history with the owner, which is how I believe they even got the job in the first place. Our general manager doesn’t know anything about any of the dogs. Solid chance he wouldn’t be able to identify about 95% of the dogs that come in daily. The owner I’ve personally seen come to the business once in the last 2 years. Most of the time the only reason the owner comes anywhere near the business is to pick up their dogs (who get watched for free, obviously). Owner pulls up in a big…
Unsure if this belongs here but thought I would share. Context – We have a meeting which my manager delivers to the team, basically the company are asking everyone to be more punctual as part of a shrinkage report, the time they pay us for but which we are not working is too high (so they say). Our activity is monitored, mouse movement, which systems you are on for how long, how much work you do and how quickly its done, the overall quality and more are all monitored and more importantly, managed. This meeting appeals (guilting) to us as colleagues directly to come back from breaks sharply and on time as the knock on effect, as they argue, causes more work for our colleagues. If you are not there to do your work someone else has to do so. This is where it begins. I raised the fact that…
Title sounds like I'm a crazed stalker or something, but I'm really not. So for a little context, my partner suffers with some mental health issues that I won't go into. This has meant she has had to take time off work previously. On top of this, she is being bullied by a colleague in the place. After multiple times notifying her management, absolutely nothing was done about it. This is to the point where we feel the workplace is unsafe for her to be in. She was due to meet her manager about this today. 9.30 am roles around and I get a call from her asking for me to pick her up. I reschedule my meetings, hop in the wagon and hightail it down there. She comes outside, sits in the car and said her manager is waiting for me. I'm a little bit more experienced than her…
Manager of department has set small projects for each employee to improve our department such as making plans for rooms or sourcing new equipment. The majority of us are paid hourly but it’s implied that we would be researching outside of work hours. Boss didn’t mention anything about pay. The problem is, my task is due on the day of my appraisal (chance of starting training towards a promotion). What do I do?
What do you do to bring in money?
non employee or employer jobs. My office job is soul crushing and I want out. Just need some ideas because I never want to work for anyone ever again.
