Segregation is not diversity.
My previous workplace (restaurant) proclaimed about being diverse and accepting. They accepted gay men, but lesbians were made fun of. They had one black person working there (they had two venues and there was only one black person at each establishment. Coincident? I think not.) FOH were all white, polishers were Asian (from one specific country that attracts the most white sexpats) and BOH were Nepalese and Latinos. They claimed their style was from the 60s. I walked out feeling like I just came out of the sixties. Edit: Honestly, the first red flag was when the manager claimed about having Irish ancestry. From my experience, when people bring up their ancestry, ethnicity or ask you about yours, they're racist. I know Irish has a history of being discriminated against, but to become a racist yourself is just as bad. Edit 2: Not sure why people are bringing up about…

Bootlicking culture at work
Alright, I think I've lurked enough. Gonna share a little something on the work culture in the country where I currently work. This country is perhaps the stereotype of living in absolute luxury, that is not the US or anywhere in Europe. Here's a couple of instances I can share with you: Literally every boss, manager, executive is addressed or referred to as (name) Sir/Ma'am. When I came in, I straight up asked for their names, shook their hand as I introduced myself, and called them as their names. They couldn't so much as process that I didn't add a “sir” or “ma'am” suffix. I don't work in the military. This is done even outside of work – and I wish you could see the look on their faces. When a person of senior rank or position gives a direction, there's almost no questioning, and the world turns into a…
Entry level Chemist
I have my first round of interviews on Thursday, in an entry level position. The requirements are a BSc Chemistry, and one year related experience. I had to write a test to apply, and write another test before the interview. The wage is less than what I make now, working as a sanitation worker in a hospital. I am most of the way through my degree, but I don't think they realize that, even though it is stated on my resume. My degree is one of the hardest to attain in university, but after looking around the past few months I am disheartened by the jobs I see. I've seen posting to work at toy stores that pay more. How am I meant to earn a living, if a full time job isn't enough to pay rent? This is one of the few full time jobs I have found in…
Interview situations
What are your the most interesting / untypical interview situations? I once interviewed a guy who came for the interview drunk. Another time there was another guy who stunk so much I had to open the window – and it was early spring.
“A stink check will be carried out”
I hate the CS entry level job market.
Junior in college with a CS major here. For background, I find myself feeling pressure from multiple sides to get an internship because thats supposed to make me more employable. Thing is I don't really WANT to do an internship, period. They sound nice, really. I could work remotely and make decent money for the Summer. (Some offers actually pay less than retail and food service now but I disregard those.) However I just don't feel like sacrificing a whole Summer break that I could be using to visit family, travel to a few places on my bucket list, and generally just get a break from coding I'm already burnt out on. It's not like I won't have 40 years to gain experience afterwards so I'm in no rush. But no, apparently not interning makes me unemployable. In fact, I should actually spend countless hours of my free time “coding…
Please be kind as I'm recovering and trying to navigate – while prepping myself the best I can. I'm in an at will employment status and recently has to be on leave. My employer has shown questionable behaviors and dishonorable ethics when it comes down to treating their employees. My performance has been positive and recognized but I've been vocal about the lack of support in my project and while voicing this concern, seen as “the problem” by my employer. They've placed me in a situation that is isolating and I've been neglected and overworked. It is possible that my boss may let me go or fire me for “any reason” when I come back to work. Here are my questions: Can I say “I quit” while he is trying to fire/let me go? So that it looks better in my employment record? I worry about how this will affect…
