I've posted about my last workplace here before, but I was reminded of something that happened while reading another post earlier this week. Apologies in advance if it's too long or doesn't belong here. I had to share somewhere I figured people would appreciate my experience in a toxic workplace. For anyone who needs the warning, this involves 🩸 and ️. I'm not going to sugarcoat it, I was once a much different person. I used to mock the concept of being “triggered”. Thankfully, I learned quite a bit more about what it truly meant to have a triggering experience and what a trigger really was. Then I realized that I myself had been triggered before and I became much more compassionate and empathetic toward others than I had ever been. I'm not proud of this, but I'm sharing to help introduce the difficulty experience I'm about to recount. Nearly…

off-the-clock training, is this illegal?
I work for a coffee shop, and part of the training is learning the recipes. My manager says i should be studying the recipes in my free time so that within 2 weeks of starting she can “quiz me” to see if I'm ready to work the drink bars. I do not like that they expect me to work off the clock. I point blank asked her if she is expecting me to work off the clock and she snapped back “study?? Uh yeah.” Like it is totally normal. I'm new to food service, but I've worked a lot of retail, and I know job training has to be compensated. I'm wondering if this is different? I don't think she is technically requiring it, which must be the loophole they are working through. But if she is going to test me on the information, and it's information that is required…
So my gf works for thjs restaurant here in NJ, she found out couple months ago that if she don’t make minimum wage for her shift that the restaurant had to supplement the difference at end of pay period. She went back divided hours by gross made and some checks came to 7$ and change an hour, so she went to higher ups and they gave her a bogus print of extra money for them pay periods she didn’t make or reflect on the check….. this goes on with every employee along with other shady practices like big parties where owner gets the tip not the servers they just get 15$ hour party pay they call it…. What is her options here
James McMurtry “We Can’t Make It Here”
Gratitude towards good people.
I recently posted on here about being laid off and having me and my wife’s health insurance canceled and generally being tossed out by my employer. The outpouring of encouragement, solidarity, understanding and generosity. One redditor in particular offered to help to help us financially. Which quite literally just helped us keep our home. Thanks to everyone for the support. It’s keeping me motivated and hopeful. Next step is getting into this union shop where i will have some protection and job security.
I’m so tired of horrible jobs
Every job i get I end up running from because of either terrible pay, terrible management or both. I’m so sick of it. I just want a job I can feel secure in that fits my strengths. Today my boss humiliated me and demeaned me in front of a new employee. I’m so defeated. I’m almost starting to understand why some people choose to live on the streets.
I get documents detailing meetings between the union and management at my place of work. In almost every complaint the union brings up (largely wage theft via unpaid overtime or adjusting schedules so that OT won't be necessary) management has claimed communication is the error. I've not been at the job long but it seems like every time they have a meeting something is brought up by the union and management states the problem is actually just communication. Is this a common tactic? What have people found are successful ways to address this either with communication or by turning things around on management?
