My aunt has been battling cancer for a while, the treatments were going well but she suddenly got worse.
She was taken to the doctor where we found out the cancer had spread to her brain and that she had at most a month left.
I work as a asset surveyor for local municipalities so I work outside of my home province for most of the year so when I got the news I obviously called my manager to ask if I could leave after work on the Friday travel back home at night and spend the Saturday with my aunt and drive back on Sunday.
My manager tried everything in his power to make it happen but the CEO's reasoning was that it was going to cost the company too much because the guest house was already paid for, the travel costs were too high and they could not bill the municipality for the day I was not there.
I offered to pay for the guest house and petrol/tolls but his counter argument was that if I do this now there's no way to know that I won't do it again next month.
This has me really fucked up, I really enjoy the work I do but this situation has me really questioning the morals and values of the company I work for, I can't afford to leave this job because of the high joblessness rate in my country but at the time how do I continue working for someone who cares so little for his employees?
