I'm a software engineer. I've been in the industry for some time now. It is one of the highest paying industries (my salary is ok, but nowhere near as high as FANG companies' salaries), and despite that, I'm already looking for a second job. My salary simply can't keep up with the inflation and things are starting to look hard for me and my family. I'm studying a master's degree to be able to have “better opportunities”. But I'm really considering now if that degree will make any difference.
So now I'm trying to decide whether I should get that second job to help my family or try to make things work the way they are now because I already have a lot in my plate (family, work, school). Thinking about this has made some things look pretty pointless. All this effort to earn a few more bucks and in detriment of my health and time I could spend with my family, but maybe without those few extra bucks things won't go well for us.
I'm in a privileged position, as I have food, a roof over my head and so on. But, I mean, that's at least what all people should have. We shouldn't see ourselves forced to choose between our families, our health or surviving. This is me venting, more than anything, really.
A clearer path to real change is very much needed. Greed is taking this world straight to shit: industries destroying entire ecosystems for money, companies burning their workers out and then firing them with no regard for anything, people harming other people to survive (or just out of cruelty)…and all of this is the result of a system that has been crushing everything on its path for over a century.
The most “evident” answer would be to quit, go against the system and all of that which we've been listening for decades, but well, it's easier said than done. I don't know what is needed, nor do I know if any of us can do anything…I just know that it needs to change before there's nothing left.
