I occasionally do work for an IT staffing agency. A few months ago they contacted me about a job as a field technician for a large computer and printer manufacturer. I said sure I'll do it. they get back to me a week or so later and tell me the company filled the position with an internal transfer who moved from another city.
Fast forward to January. They call me again saying the job is open, so i say i'll do it. About a week later, they call me back with the same story as before. I figure there was probably some miscommunication somewhere, no big deal.
A couple weeks go by. I get another call on a tuesday in mid February. One of the current techs turned in their notice, so they are looking for a replacement. So I agree to an interview thursday. Do the interview, goes well. They call me on friday and say I'm hired.
Monday morning I get another call. The tech who was quitting, is apparently not quitting anymore. So now I'm not hired.
Thursday morning I get another call. They want to hire me after all. I ask “are you sure this time?” They say yes, absolutely. I accept. Finish all the onboarding paperwork, and complete a drug test.
That brings us to this morning. Get another call. I'm told that the company no longer has the budget for the position I was hired for. Meanwhile, they returned $7.2 billion to shareholders in the form of dividends and stock buybacks in 2021. But can't afford a $50K salary. Makes perfect sense.
