Company classifies me as independent contractor. Tries to get me to work for free.

Title says it… Company asked its 1099 instructors to fly to corporate hq for a series of meetings, to train new contractors, participate in product development and quality assurance. Some funtime activities were also planned. Event required 2 full days on-site and 2 days of travel. Company paid for travel expenses. Employees were paid to attend. Contractors were told they would not be paid to attend. Attendance was optional, but strongly encouraged. Explanation given “It's optional, you have to decide if it's worth it.” Some bullshit from a bootlicking fellow contractor: “If you believe in the company like I do, you'll be there.” Later found out they were in middle of negotiating full-time position. Feels wrong. Is wrong? Is against FSLA?
