So…. long story short, I was diagnosed with an incurable sudden onset chronic illness on march 21st. Due to the nature of the illness, I can't really leave my house for more than 5min unsupervised, since I rely on external help in order to keep me safe.
Naturally, I immediately told my boss all about the diagnosis and my personal prognosis (which is very unclear when it comes to whether I will be able to work again). I explained to her IN DETAIL the ways this sudden illness is affecting my daily life. I specifically explained to her my problem about leaving the house on my own.
A few days later she texts me, telling me I need to bring my home office equipment to our workplace. I explain again, how I cannot do that BECAUSE OBVIOUSLY I STILL CAN'T LEAVE THE HOUSE. She tells me to send it via post. I tell her I will find someone to bring the package to the post office since it is also more distance than I can manage. After three days I have finally convinced someone to bring the package to the post office for me. During those three days, I get multiple messages from her, telling me to bring it to the post office etc. She tells me that my replacement won't be able to work if she doesn't have the supplies (which is odd, considering the amount of identical laptops and iPads they have).
Eventually the supplies get there safely. The moment they arrived there, the company basically cut all contact with me. I wasn't even fired at that point! I emailed HR multiple times, messaged my boss over whatsapp as well as email. No responses at all. I still get my paycheck, just no communication AT ALL. I was basically ghosted by them at this point. A few WEEKS pass and suddenly I get a written letter in my mailbox telling me they are letting me go with my last day being in may.
The best part? I didn't get a single “get well soon” from HR or something. Not even in the letter. I mean, I understand why they let me go. I would be a massive burden to the company. But for a company that is IN THE HEALTH SECTOR this behaviour is just embarrassing. I told my boss in excruciating detail about how I have pretty much been ripped out of the life I know, about how I don't know my own body anymore, about how I am now permanently disabled. I showed the company doctors notes etc…..
and I don't even get a single “hope you feel better soon”.
Glad to see how appreciated I am. Good riddance.
