A few years ago I interviewed for a biotech company. After 4 interviews (2 technical) and a 2 hour coding challenge, they sent me an offer for lower than what I asked for. I asked the lady if the salary is negotiable and she said “not by much” and that they just want to make sure everyone is paid fairly.
After I got off the phone call with her I received the official offer letter. I went on Glassdoor (like all programmers do) to check what the actual pay rate is my role. Not surprisingly it was 10k a year more than what I was offered, and what I had asked for. Basically, my asking price was what they already paid.
I sent an email to the hiring lady explaining what I had see on Glassdoor and that I see the company pays what I asked for and to quote her on her words “I wanted to be paid fairly” in comparison to the other engineers.
The next day they rescinded the offer and she called me to say that I was calling her a liar because I quoted her words in the email.I tried to explain to her I was agreeing with her, not calling her a liar but she wouldn’t have it. So I never worked there. It was a good thing too. Company was full of red flags tbh
TLDR: Company made the offer. I tried to negotiate based on Glassdoor salary reviews. They rescinded the offer because I tried to negotiate the salary based on what I saw online.
