Company switched from manager reviews to self reviews.

My company recently switched from annual managerial reviews where you would sit with your superior for 10 mins and go over your strengths and areas for improvement along with pay raises… To a self review system where you have to write about yourself in 5 areas of focus. i hate it and feel like it puts more work on my plate treading the fine line of singing my praises vs looking humble. if a contractor does a job for me…i dont approach him to tell me what he thinks of the job he did. I look at it and tell him whether I’m satisfied or not. I feel like this is an attempt to limit arguing when employees don’t agree with their assessments bc now it’s like “You said it, not me”. I hate this new system. Why is it so bad to just want to get through the week…

Why is it so bad to just want to get through the week on auto pilot churning out my job on a satisfactory level and collecting my paycheck?

What is this obsession with constant self analysis and improvement?
