I’m a mid-20’s M working in a financial institution.
I’m getting married at the end of this year, and I have decided to start growing my hair out longer. My fiancé is very supportive of this, and she has expressed her liking for my new style. I wash my hair several times a week, and typically style it on a daily basis. Occasionally, I will wear my hair up in a small bun to keep it out of my face while working. I work in a cubicle setting and have little to no interaction with more than 10 people a day within the organization. I do my work, and have shown the ability to do my job exceptionally well. However, someone in my upper management talked to my boss and basically told them that I will not progress in the company if I keep my hairstyle as it is. I’ve gone through several promotions in the time I’ve been here and they have treated me well prior to this. I’m torn on what I should do.
Handbook excerpt: “… you are expected to present a clean, neat, and tasteful appearance. You should always dress and groom yourself according to the requirements of your position…”
TLDR: Upper management is threatening to hold back my progression within my company unless I cut my hair.
